The Tipping Point Experiment

I recently became the subject of an experiment and it hasn’t been scary at all! I have a question for you. How tall do you think the stack would be if I handed you a huge sheet of paper and asked you to fold it repeatedly until you had done so 50 times? Some have speculated that it would be as tall as one of those enormous yellow pages directories. Yes, before GOOGLE this is how we found a phone numbers and addresses!

Back to our “puzzle”. Other people may get the idea of the question and guess the paper might be something larger, such as the height of a table or the distance from the floor to the ceiling. The solution will SHOCK you. It would be roughly how far away the SUN is! This is an illustration of geometric progression, as used in mathematics.

Donna, why are you telling me all of this? What does this have to do with ANYTHING? I’m SO glad you asked!

That's me in the middle. The group all got t-shirts that say, "I follow #donnajoppie" do you?

My local writers group (pictured above) used this principle, explained from the book “The Tipping Point”, by Malcolm Gladwell to do a social media blitz for me to help me grow my author platform which includes my author social media channels on Facebook and Instagram.

Last Friday, at 8am the group began with an email blitz and social media push. The goal is to grow exponentially according to the chart in Gladwell’s book by asking our writers group of around 50 to share a meme and personally ask 3 people to follow #DonnaJoppie on Facebook and/or Instagram, They also asked them to share the meme and and ask 3 of their friends to do the same, and so on.

Advertisers back in the day knew of this concept

geometric progression, viral marketing, exponential growth

Tomorrow will be one week since the project started. The group have a BIG goal. Some would say impossible. BUT my pages ARE growing and I’m so appreciative of their efforts to help this #thrillerwriter get published! My Facebook is up over 57%!

If you aren’t following me on social media, my links are at the bottom of each page. Simply click and follow! It’s that easy! I often share pieces of my daily life as an author and happenings with the books I’ve written and have yet to write!
